Hey everyone!
Sorry my lack of posts these past few months--I've been crazy busy with senior year. I actually just graduated high school yesterday! And big news: I'M GOING TO HARVARD!!! I hope that doesn't seem like bragging, but it was a HUGE struggle to get there, and I just wanted people to know that yes, you can have mental illness and go places you would've never imagined. There were so many times that I was so close to just dropping out and getting my GED, but I somehow stuck it out and the outcome was better than I ever thought it would be.
Now of course I'm not saying that going to Harvard is better than any other outcome--it's just what was right for me. I met another young woman last year with mental illness who dropped out of high school, got her GED, and now works at a non-profit mental health organization (making more money than those teachers who told her she was useless, might I add!). What I AM saying is that graduating high school for people with mental illness is a much bigger deal than for people without it. My physics teacher was joking with me the other day about how high school graduation should be more low key--after all, the vast majority of people graduate high school in this country. But the majority is not so great for us. Therefore, I am CELEBRATING, and so should you! Whether you're graduating from high school, getting your GED, going into the workforce, going to college, or taking some time to straighten out your life, it's a big deal! Please, the fact that we're even able to get out of bed in the morning is a wonder sometimes--we've all had those days/months/years.
Now back to my apologies. I've been away for so long (had problems with my medication, went on home instruction, applied to 16 colleges, slowly got responses from those 16 colleges, etc.), but this summer I have big plans. I'm working to make the site a bit easier to navigate, and I'm adding a LOT more resources. I'm sorry if you've e-mailed me and I haven't responded--again, I've had a crazy year. But a lot of you have asked about resources in your town/state/country, and I'm realizing that it would probably be a lot more helpful if I just posted all of my info on the website. While the website is helpful (at least I'd like to think so!), sometimes you need to connect with people locally, and I want to give you the resources to do that.
Oh and I also realize that a lot of the links on this site have spontaneously stopped working. I'll try to get on that as well.
In conclusion, my apologies, and expect a site upgrade soon!
